Third Die Blind
- Roll three dice: a d4, a d12, and a d20.
- If the d12 result matches the d4 result exactly, that’s a critical failure.
- If the d12 result is less than the d4 result, that’s a miss.
- If the d12 result is greater than the d4 result and less than the d20 result, that’s a success. E.g., the d12 showing (or after modifying with optional #7 below) falls between the d4 and d20 results.
- If the d12 result is equal to or greater than the d20 result exactly, that’s a critical success.
- If all three dice show the same result, that’s also a critical success.
- Optional: To roll with advantage, add 1 to your d12 result. To roll with disadvantage, subtract 1 from your d12 result.
- Optional: A partial success (success with a cost) would be if your d12 result (after modifying with optional #7 above) is equal to or less than the rolled d4+4.
This mechanic is untested in gameplay. I made it up in about 5 minutes after reading the post from Prismatic Wasteland.
My friend Phil asserts this method favors success too frequently. We tested a bit at the Barmon outside table and he seems correct. Maybe a better dice pool would be a d6, a d10, and a d20?
Is the Third Die Blind resolution mechanic “fair” and statistically worthy? Please comment below.
